Nintendo is king when it comes to making first party games for their systems, but are they doing it for the gamer's or the money? They have revived gaming with their first home system (the Nintendo Entertainment System, aka NES) with bringing home video game series that are practically household names now. However with their staple games, they have had numerous spin-offs. Not to say that the spin-offs are bad, lo and behold, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Party (old ones). However, it seems that they are trying to squeeze every penny they can get from a franchise, by making numerous spin-offs of Mario and Donkey Kong that, while they are welcomed and are decent, they just seem like money makes. Instead of what they could be doing for the community by making sequels and such to forgotten gems like Kid Icarus and Ice Climbers, we get rehashes.
Any thoughts about Nintendo and what you think they are trying to do. If you have a definite answer, please vote on the poll.

When it comes to the Mario franchise I tend to agree, I think they are making far, far too many spin-offs.
Take Mario Party for example -The first one was good, as was the second, even the third was ok...but come on, they are so many I just don't care anymore. >_>
And what's with all the sports games? Not to say that they are bad, but really, do we need a Mario game for every sport? I don't mind some spin-offs, some of them are really good, but I just wish they would scale back the spin-offs and give us a REAL Mario game!
Also, I really like the idea of sequels to some older games, as well as some brand new franchises.
So I just want to end with this-
Please, Please Nintendo, give us a Mario game that we can make enemies go *poof* by jumpin' on their heads, that's all I ask!

What can I say? Maybe they'd stop making Mario Party games when people will stop BUYING them. It's the same thing across the whole industry. If Tony Hawk Underground 856, Mario Party Umpteen, and GTA: Who The f**k Cares What City It's In are what people want, then that's what the game companies are forced to pump out. As a matter of fact, these Mario Party games feel like they're getting progressively worse on purpose, just so people WOULD STOP BUYING THEM. However, on the flipside of things, Nintendo has made a habit out of making each game in a series different from any of the other entries. Take Mario for instance: Each one plays differently, yet at the same time holds true to the roots of the franchise. The same goes for Zelda, Starfox, and Pikmin. Nintendo isn't faultless, but that doesn't keep it from being one of the best game companies in existence.

I know that, but they aren't forced to do anything. That right there says that they have the dollar signs in their eyes. $_$ *KACHING*

I know that, but they aren't forced to do anything. That right there says that they have the dollar signs in their eyes. $_$ *KACHING* Well, of course. Money's an important factor in any industry, Gray. If they find that they're going to get the most money for doing the least amount of work, they're going to gobble it up until nobody cares. That's just the way things are. Besides that, it isn't as if Nintendo is neglecting all their old franchises. I remember that before Metroids Prime and Fusion, there hadn't been any Metroid games in such a while that the series was presumed discontinued (Which actually explains half the success of Konami's Symphony of the Night). They've been rereleasing all their old NES games in various forms because they know people still love those games. And of course, several "forgotten" characters got the star treatment for the SSB series. Remember the demo of Duck Hunt 2 for the Wii at E3? And how about the Excitebike series? How about the sequel for Yoshi's Island on DS? There seems to be only one entry on every other Nintendo platform (NES, N64, and now Excite Truck on Wii). Let's also not neglect all of Nintendo's great "recent" games, like Nintendogs, Brain Age, Pikmin, Drill Dozer, and the Wario Ware series. I'd hardly say that Nintendo just cares about money. They seem to acknowledge that money is important, but game design is an art form not to be trivialized. But I must say, as long as Nintendo keeps Urban Champion in its grave, I'm a happy camper.

Nintendo is definitely milking its franchises. But I'm okay with it for one reason: the spin-off games are still fun. If Nintendo was making a million different Mario sports games and they all sucked, I'd be a little annoyed. But the fact is, all the Mario sports titles are solid games. And it's not like Nintendo isn't making anything new. The DS has been home to plenty of new titles (Nintendogs, Brain Age, Trace Memory, etc.), and the same appears to be true with Wii (Wii Sports, Disaster, etc.).
I guess what I'm trying to say is this: if Nintendo only made crappy spin-offs, I'd hate it. But as long as Nintendo makes fun spin-offs and puts some effort into new franchises, I'm happy.

I tend to agree with Jason: I admit that they are milking some of their franchises (mainly Mario) but I don't really have a problem with it because most of the games still retain high production values, if not genuinely fun gameplay. I think its cool that sports fans now have Mario games to look forward to. I LOVE Super Mario Strikers and will definitely be picking it up when it comes out as a GH later this year. I'm not into baseball, but I heard Mario Baseball was cool too. Mario Party games are great for...well...parties, and both Mario Golf and Mario Tennis are solid titles as well. If they started getting to the point where they were just sub-par games I would be upset, but thats not the case yet. I will continue to brood over Super Mario Strikers Charged : )

Well, there's no question that Nintendo has grossed the biggest profits several times. Super Mario Bros. 3 raked in over 3 million copies sold. Multiply that by about 30 bucks per copy (If that's what they were sold for at the time). I think that's how it went, not all that sure. But yeah, so long as Nintendo innovates with its older franchises, doesn't forget the underdog franchises, and makes FUN spinoffs of its franchises, it's all good.
