Skillet... the Christian rock group? lol System of a Down, the metal band that kinda makes me think of if R.E.M. went metal. I like both R.E.M. and SoaD.

Thanks to Gray, now im sad, cause SoaD isnt going to make anouther album for awhile!
Im listening to Vicinity of Obscenity (Hypnotise album), and its awesome!!! If you wanna play Mario and listen to SoaD at the same time, listen to that song, or Toxicity, Aerials, BYOB, Chop Suey, F**k the System, Needles, or Shimmy!! I recommend it, i listen to that when im playing CSS, and it works like crazy!!!

Depending on 'how' you make your music, yes, music in video games is definitely important: Important in 'balance' with other game development elements[graphics, story(mostly in RPG's), gameplay, etc.] that makes video games fun in complete 'balance' depending on 'how' your develop your game.
As for games with the best music, mostly the Mario series, FF series and the Street Fighter series. But despite my choices, overall, 'every' game(good or bad) has different video game music that's good for different people's taste that I don't 'have' to choose at all. ^_^

Yeah! Holy crap! Anyway, as far as game music goes, I'm more of the orchestrated-type. Like, Final Fantasy, Tales of, and even Halo have some awesome soundtracks just because they're orchestrated. Although I'll also take some "surreal" sounds at times, like the soundtracks to Sonic Rush and Katamari Damacy.

We should think up some weird song/game combos. ;p Guess I overlooked this post. I'd say an interesting mix would probably be playing the FullMetal Alchemist soundtrack during a session of Kingdom Hearts. Another one would be playing ACDC while playing Super Monkey Ball! ;D
