They were in a faster car. I have no idea how I was able to catch up to them without any Super Mushrooms or anything. I just started pushing the A-button, and then... I tied them.

Improbable. As you can clearly see, it's not impossible. I'm sure that they programed the users to win in a tie. Example: if you get 36 points on the Mushroom Cup, and another cart get 36 points you will get the first place.

Oh that happened to me a couple of times, and each time they said I won, so I'm pretty sure they just let the player controlled win just like how they let the player controlled character win if you're tied with a computer at the end of a tournament.
