is multiplayer a feature that needs to be unlocked?
or is it available from the start?

I think it's available from the start... I'm not positive, though. JSR is right, You can play it from the start. Before I tried single mode me and my brother played multiplayer for an hour. |

Multiplayer is ready to go from the start! But:
2 maps need to be unlocked somehow while playing Single Player mode.

Yeah, multiplayer is availablef from the start, but you need to unlock 2 maps like MasTa said, and also you only start with one soundtrack, but there's supposedly unlockable soundtracks.
I've just completed 40% of scans and unlocked the Image Gallery.

4 available at the start, plus the 2 unlockables. Meaning 6 (duh).
