The Japanese version of RE4 came with a DVD that showcased some footage of the first version of the game shown with Leon traversing a dimly-lit castle. IGN has some videos of it, and it's still beautiful. If you like the finished game, you have to check this out. cube.ign.com/articles/582/582869p1.html

The lighting effects in the old RE4 are really impressive. The old RE4 looked like a lot of fun.
But, I'm glad they changed the camera angle to the current camera. The old camera system seems kind of bad in comparison to the new one.

Man, those dolls gave me chills. Same. I think RE4 would've been a much scarier game had it followed this path instead of the one it ended up on. I can't say I regret Capcom's decision, though. RE4 is the best console game of this generation.

But yes, I am very interested in RE4 and plan on buying it really soon. On the topic of that video...it's not exactly working for me at the moment.

Nice find and I do think that the feeling of watching those videos would be awesome when playing it. I love Resident Evil 4 the way it ended up and it wasn't as freaky as that, but it still seemed to have my heart pounding the whole time.

RE 3.5 looked much more psychologically scary. However, it doesn't look like a ton of fun. Fighting a bunch of enemies that aren't real didn't look very appealing, and the camera switching from fixed to over-the-shoulder looked annoying.
If I were directing RE5, I'd give it the same camera and gameplay of RE4, but I'd reduce ammo and enemies greatly. I think making a dark, scary RE with the improved camera would be the way to go.

I think I'd do the exact same thing. From what I've heard, RE4 is more creepy than scary. The next Resident Evil needs to be scary; not just creepy.

Yeah, they need to take note of what something along the lines of Silent Hill or fatal frame are doing...since I know in the old RE games, they used cheap zombie scares or the "omg the dog came through the window" trick. But in this one it stopped trying to be scary and just put you in a creepy atmosphere, which is good. But now survival horror games are using a much scarier tactic...psychological terror. This is probably why SH has been able to scare the living crap out of anyone who plays it, and I think Capcom should take note of this.

Well, it depends on the direction that Capcom wants the Resident Evil series to go in. If Capcom wants to create a truly scary game, they should use psychological horror in the next RE. But, if Capcom doesn't want the game to be downright scary, the current feel of RE is fine.

I think the psychological-horror direction of RE wouldn't work out. I think RE needs creepy environments, eerie music, tense atmosphere, and the occasional "jump." REmake is one of my favorite games ever, despite the fact that the gameplay doesn't appeal to me much, because of how downright atmospheric it is. Walking through hallway lined with creepy paintings, with suspenseful music and lightning flashing through the windows is just downright immersive. REmake isn't a scary game, but it is eerie and creepy to the core. RE4 was creepy in a few spots, but was mostly intense the rest of the time.
RE 3.5 looked creepy, but it also looked scary in a psychological way, which I didn't really like. Hopefully they find a medium for the next installment.
Imagine RE on next-gen systems (REvolution would be hot, though I don't want to get ahead of myself with RE4 going to PS2, but I'd like to see Nintendo at least still get a version, regardless of whether it is exclusive.) Seriously though, if RE4/RE 3.5 can both almost get pre-rendered graphics in real-time on the GameCube, imagine something that looked as good as the REmake from RE4's perspective.
Just thinking about it is mindblowing.
