Tales of Phantasia is a good game and all, but Dan's early impression is accurate. Phantasia is hard... but that isn't a downfall. I prefer hard games to easy games, if only to improve my skill and gaming mastery. However, that's not all. Dan forgets to mention (Or at least he didn't get around to it) that Phantasia was butchered by localization and translation issues. For example, "Cress" and "Klaus" are not even the character's names... They are "Cless" and "Klarth" respectively. "Kurarusu" means "Klarth". Then again, I could also just be far too picky since I'm a Tales traditionalist, and actually played a bit of the original Super Famicom version. Also, Phantasia's churches serve "the gods". This is common practice by localization to create vague religions featured in games, but the churches always referred to their deity as "God," which probably meant they were Christian, most likely Catholic, churches. That and, the voice acting hurts more than the difficulty. Seriously. The villain, Daos, sounds like a snotty spring breaker; Cless sounds like Ben Stein; etc. So there it is, a game that was victim to the "One Piece" effect, at least almost.

I highly doubt Catholicism exists in the world of ToP. The name changes didn't bother me, heck, even the voice acting is bearable. What bothered me was the censoring.
There's a scene on a boat where Claus and another person drink for a few hours and get rowdy. NOA can't let us know that they're drinking, though, so they were eating. It still showed them drinking out of bottles, but they're eating themselves silly. They all have hangovers in the morning and just say that they ate too much the night before. It's annoying, and you can expect some complaints about it in the review.
I'm not going to bother touching on the names since I don't know Japanese or anything. If this is what they're called, then that's what they're called. It works for me.

Trust me, listen to the Japanese voice-acting, and then compare it to the English "acting." None of the English voices fit and they're very half-hearted. "Lightning, Tiger, Blade." Cless sounds as though he's bored. But yeah, about the "name game," I suppose if you don't know much Japanese, it wouldn't bother you... But I know lots about the Japanese language, so the name changes just bug me. Since Japanese has no "th" or "l" sounds, the names are written as "Kuressu" and "Kurarusu"; since "n" is the only consenant in Japanese that doesn't have to be spelled with a vowel attatched, and since the "u"s are pronounced silently, it's actually challenging to translate things correctly. I understand that. But, really... It's "Cless" and "Klarth", as bizarre as the names sound, those are their names. The censoring... Silly. They don't try censoring too much on Symphonia or Legendia, but then they "One Piece" Phantasia? Something about that doesn't seem... very koscher (Did I spell that right?)

"One Piece" ?? When One Piece, a Japanese franchise about pirates killing each other over treasure aimed at teenagers (includes blood, swearing, and suggestive themes), came to America in TV form, 4Kids Entertainment (The TV show's publisher) decided it needed to be aimed at small children instead of its actual audience. Thusly: They hired the voice cast from the vocally "superb" Shadow the Hedgehog. They completely omitted any and all major plot points in favor of continuous episodes that had little to do with each other, much less anything at all. They renamed Zoro "Zolo" for fear of being sued by a swashbuckler from Spain. Gutted the original theme song and replaced it with a horribly pathetic rap song sung by people who don't even know the meaning of the word "pirate"... or "peanut butter", for that matter. They replaced all the weaponry with toys like water pistols, pop guns, and rubber chickens for the swords (I'm being sarcastic, but...). They tricked little kids into thinking that getting stabbed won't kill you. When these kids who grow up on censored TV shows like 4Kids' perversion of "One Piece" become adults, they'll realize that their childhoods were a lie, and the suicide rate will triple. Thanks a lot, 4Kids! You've done our country such a wonderful favor of killing off our young with your asinine garbage! The moral of the story? Don't let 4Kids happen to YOUR kids.

Oh, that One piece! I love One Piece! Well, I read it in the original Japanese version. I read the manga, never saw the Anime version of it. Seriously, One Piece is my absolute favourite manga ever!
That's weird, there are no swearing in the japanese version.... And actually, the main characters don't actually kill their opponents. Don't try to argue with me, I read it in Japanese, and i know the series back to front. Even the author says they don't kill.
They most definitely DON'T fight over treasure! Yes, there ultimate goal is the great One PIece treasure, but they also fight for pride and their friends!
I can argue all day to defend the name of One Piece, so don't you knock it!!!!

I'm not knocking One Piece, I'm knocking what 4Kids DID to One Piece. It's awful, what they did to One Piece. It's best you stick to the manga, and ignore 4Kid's evil incarnation of the loveable pirate franchise.
Yar.

I found that ToP was rather easy actually, but on the other hand I think that I was too high leveled. Oh well.
I really hated the voice acting. It sounded like crap, and I wish I could have turned the voice acting off.
The translation errors were not really all that annoying to me, for I have never played the original game.
I never really cared for the original Japanese version of One Piece, but the 4kids butchered version made me wanna hurt people.

I really hated the voice acting. It sounded like crap, and I wish I could have turned the voice acting off. Actually, you can. Go to the Options menu, select Voice Volume, and drag the little square all the way over to the left until the VV is at 0%. I've also recieved news from my sister that, while Namco edited the "Klarth getting drunk" scene, they left in Arche's description of a very sexual dream she had (Which included Cless). So they let Arche talking about sex, but wouldn't let Klarth get drunk. Kinky.
