I would suggest one the most, though I've never played three.

To say the least, I like the 3D Sonic games. Not all of them, but many of them. They're not as good as the 2D games, but they weren't terrible. But of course, like all game series out there, Sonic had some low points: Sonic 3D Blast Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine Sonic Drift Sonic Drift 2 Sonic R Sonic Shuffle Tails' Sky Patrol (Easily the fourth worst game of all time) Sonic Spinball
Sonic Adventure was pretty mediocre. I remember having played the second Adventure: better, but not yet shining. Then came Sonic Heroes. One word: EXCELLENT. Sega managed to use most of the Sonic cast and impliment a new strategy platforming gameplay mechanic. Dazz awesome. Then came Shadow and Sonic Riders. While both were good, they weren't as great as they could have, and should have, been. Let's just hope that Secret Rings and the Hedgehog's 360 outing will be able to top Heroes. So far, though, my alltime favorite Sonics are as follows:
5. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) 4. Sonic Heroes (Gamecube) 3. Sonic CD (PC) 2. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Genesis) 1. Sonic Rush (DS)
Perhaps the most underrated Sonic games would be Sonic the Fighters and Sonic Triple Trouble on Gamegear. Thankfully, they're both available in Sonic Gems Colection, an exclusive Gamecube game!

I tell you something, though, don't show this list to anyone at, say, GI Online. It's pretty much fascism, but people are going to try their hardest to crush your INFORMED opinion on a series.

No. Mario has about 58 games. He's also featured, either as a playable character or as a cameo, in over 70 other games. As for Sonic, he's had quite a number of games, but I wouldn't put his number anywhere near Mario's.

Nothing failed about him, Lorris. He's successfully kept Sega in the black for 15 long years, and it looks like he'll keep doing so until Sega sells his license. no not in a business sense. as in a character sense. Even as a character, Sonic isn't a failure. As a matter of fact, I find the Sonic universe slightly more intriguing than the Mario universe. Does Mario have a supergenius 10-year-old for a sidekick? Nah, he just has some taller version of himself with slightly different abilities (Although his quirky personality alone means I forgive him). Is Mario drowning in chicks? Nope, he just has some princess who seems to just LET herself get kidnapped. Does Mario offer better stories? Nah, he just settles for same-old, same-old (Peach has been kidnapped! Again!). I will say one thing, though: Mario has better spinoffs than Sonic. He definitely wins in that category. The only Sonic spinoffs even worth a look are: - Sonic the Fighters (Arcade, Gamecube)
- Shadow the Hedgehog (Gamecube, Xbox, PS2)
- Sonic Riders (Gamecube, PS2, Xbox)
- Tails Adventure (Gamegear)
- Sonic Pinball Party (GBA)
And the rest are crap.

Mario on the other hand meets characters along the way but doesn't stay next to them all the time. Mario characters are also simple and odd they wouldn't be the same otherwise.

Mario on the other hand meets characters along the way but doesn't stay next to them all the time. Mario characters are also simple and odd they wouldn't be the same otherwise. But it's the same with either one of them. There's no denying that. They both focus on characters and gameplay. Now, tell me: where have the seven Koopalings from Mario 3 gone? When will Waluigi be featured in an actual Mario or Wario game? How many character spinoff games are we going to see of guys like Wario and Yoshi? Why the hell did Nintendo replace the seven Koopalings with the most poorly designed Mario character to date (Bowser Jr)? To be sure, new characters who are featured in either series are often imaginative and fun, like Fawful and Silver. I think that complaining that Sonic has too many characters only means that you need to do your homework: Mario has more characters than Sonic does, so much so that many of them have been left behind and forgotten by time (And apparently Nintendo). At least with Sonic characters, Sega tries to use as many of them aspossible without a one of them stealing the spotlight from the blue blur himself. And let's forget just how many characters there are in the MegaMan and Final Fantasy series. Therefore, "more characters" = "more fun." That goes for all game franchises. And yes, many of them do expand the gameplay (especially in the Adventure titles, although some of them weren't much fun). Tails can fly (Sonic can't), Knuckles can climb walls (Sonic can't), Blaze can hover (Sonic can't), etc. Besides, I don't think Luigi really expanded the gameplay in any Mario game other than Mario 2 and Mario 64 DS. Yoshi, DK, and Wario have all gone off on their own, so now Mario is only left with the green guy who doesn't really function any differently from himself. Characters and character gameplay affects are two more strengths that Sonic has that Mario doesn't. Mario is still fun, but Sonic can outdo him on those two levels. Nothing you can say or do can change that. Sonic Wins.
