Well, PBv4 will help out a lot, but as of now I think the forums are perfect.
One idea that I have might be, like you said, would adding special ranks (Sages or Hero of Times). I know a code that can put images next to the username, and not under it. That way we could have Triforce sprites next to each Sage or Hero of Time's name.

Now that I think about it, winning the Smash Bros competition earns you a Custom Rank and Custom Color. That's sort of like "Special Ranks".
