Seeing that many new members misses the 'Introduce yourself' thread in the General Board, why don't you use the redirect newly registered members code and redirect them to that thread (or just to the General board)?

Better yet... redirect them to the RULES.. ; That would be a bit better, since many skip the rules and go to posting. Thankfully, I went looking for the rules and got to reading them. So I agree with Shiva, forward them to the rules thread.

I would have to disagree with all of this.
I think "newbies" should get freedom when they come in. We should not force them to read the rules thread, or post in the introductions thread.
Its a rule to read the rules, plus, its not our fault if they don't. JSR, Broco, and I add rules often, so Its not our job to tell everyone we have.
So I would just say to leave it as it is.

Then it should be there fault for breaking the rules and there shouldn't be any "Your new so I'll let it slide."

Thats true, but everyone is expected to read the rules. Plus, this idea could cause confusion and such.
So for example, you enter a new school, and you read the rules. But dosen't it take you a while to get used to the rules and the enviroment?

True, it is hard to get used the rules immediately, but the school still tell you to learn the rules, don't they?

Yeah, exactly. That is why we should redirect them to the rules section. It only means "read the rules, know this place better". It's not saying "You have to learn the rules in 10 seconds or I'll kill you!".

My two cents:
I'd have to agree that redirecting new members isn't the best idea. I mean, a majority of people are able to figure things out. A lot of people may even be offended that you force them to do certain things when they first join. There are more and more people who have been to different forums in the past, and those types of people tend to not need that initial instruction. It is much easier to just kindly help people when they ask for it. Or, if someone breaks a rule, nicely let them know the error of their ways, so that they can learn from a mistake. If they are forced to read pages of rules (many of which they already know), they may become board of the forum in the first place.

But it's not forcing them. It's simply redirecting them so they can have a look.
Okay, let's return to the school example.
You arrive at a new school, and go through the front door. There's the school motto sitting right in front of you, and you can't avoid it. But you can still decide not to read it.

Yeah, like IRSSB and MasTa touched on, I like to give new members a chance to learn from their mistakes. If they keep breaking rules over and over, they'll be talked to.
As for redirecting members, it's something I might consider for the future. For the time being, I'm going to wait and see if PBv4 (once it comes out... ahem) has some sort of way to link to the rules, on the main page.
