psp.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=1956Virus Plagues 2.0.0 PSP Units October 06, 2005 by: Casey Ayers SECURITY: Though not widespread, Trojan.PSPBrick is the first example of a portable console virus. Details inside. Security company Symantec has confirmed the existence and spread of the first known virus tailored specifically to a portable gaming platform. Trojan.PSPBrick hoists itself upon the amateur homebrew user who falls for the file download believing it to be an unlocking system. After deleting four critical files, the virus displays a lewd message to users. Following this, the system lives up to its name, completely rendering the affected unit useless. At this point, the trojan is impossible to recover from, though upgrading to the newest firmware update, 2.0.1, will patch the exploit. Homebrew users should be warned that the new patch will also render all amateur programming attempts that worked under 2.0.0 useless, so the choice between functionality and security may be an issue for some users. For readers worrying about such a virus appearing on their Nintendo DS in the near future as Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service launches, it appears that there is no need for concern. Because of the way that the DS processes data, the official BIOS doesn't appear to leave room for any exploits. However, those that have modified their BIOS to allow for illegal emulation could be at risk. As always, Advanced Media will keep you updated on any developments. source: Symantec

I'm not surprised that a PSP virus exists. There is a huge PSP homebrew community and it was only a matter of time until a virus was created.

Eh...you're only at risk really if you're an idiot and get your homebrew through P2P networks. If you get your homebrew from a place like PSP-Hacks.com, the worst that'll happen is that it'll be buggy. Plus, homebrewers have already come out with a PSP antivirus.

Still, if I 'do' own a PSP(which I don't yet), I'm not putting it at risk even if there 'is' an antivirus for it(unless I 'do' need it for only emergencies).

I'm planning on grabbing myself a PSP on boxing day (hoping for a sale). So...it is sort of a tough choice between security and functionality. But I guess...really...what does all this homebrew stuff add to your PSP experience? The NES emulator is really the only thing that would intrest me.

It's like adding programs you don't really need to your computer; it's not needed, but it's fun. Also, as far as I'm concerned, if you only download from PSP-Hacks.com, you're safe from bricking your PSP. On a sidenote, I hear a DS virus is going around for DS Homebrewers who use flash memory in the GBA Slot.

I'll never own a PSP, so all I'm gonna do is laugh. The PSP was a brick to begin with. A joke. You can't launch a handheld and expect to rely on the past efforts of your rival companies with emulators! And due to this occurance, it's obvious that homebrew is a ticking timebomb... And, before you start, KY, don't. Don't even. Have you downloaded all the homebrew games from that site? If you haven't yet, you can't say that homebrew from that site is 100% safe.
