Recently, I've learned that the VP of Epic entertainment, Mark Rein, made the following statement: "Don't kid yourself--you're going to see more crappy, cheap, I-wish-I-hadn't-bought-it gimmick games based around that controller than you could ever possibly imagine." So the possibilities truly DO have limits. Rein obviously doesn't think very much. Hasn't he already considered the possibilities based on this controller? They could release sequels to games like NiGHTS Into Dreams and Samba di Amigo, among literally hundreds of others. They could reinvent old classics. They could begin a slew of awesome ideas that could only be made possible by the Rev's controller. Pfft. Gimmick indeed. Couldn't that have been said about the DS? As a matter of fact, I think it was. "The touch screen is such a gimmick! BLAARGH!" Now we have Kirby Canvas Curse, Meteos, Sonic Rush, and Castlevania among other current hits. If anyone can make people eat their own words, Nintendo has done it over and over again. They'll do it again too, in 2006. What are your opinions? Am I being too harsh, or did I nail him?

First of all, I would just like to say that I witnessed Rein making that rather dumb remark. He said it during a panel at IGN Live and the crowd responded with a bunch of booing and laughing. I guess a lot of the people were Nintendo fans. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I think Rein did go a bit too far with his comment. Sure, there will be some gimmicky games from third parties, but I would hardly say that we're going to see more gimmicky games than we could ever imagine. Just like with the DS, developers are going to get the hang of developing for Revolution and once they do, they will create some truly innovative games.

Of course. You can't say things like that, since in truth, every platform HAS those kind of games. Even if the PSone is the highest-selling console ever, and even if the Super Nintendo was the greatest machine ever made, they had tons of those games. Anyone remember Alfred Chicken or Mario is Missing? How about KISS Pinball or The Flintstones Bowling? Even the greats today have their fair share of crap (PN03, Evolution Worlds, Stake Fortune Fighters... the list goes on).

Let's put it this way: Revolution will have no more gimmicky games than the Xbox 360 will have sequels and annual sports rehashes.
