I ask this question because I always loved metroid, but I really never fully accepted the whole FPS perspective. I miss the old days of the 2D item searching and seeing samus on screen at all times. I realize they have made these for the handhelds, but I am referring to the consoles.
I understand why metroid had to move to 3D, but I think it would be really cool if they would make another side-scrolling version. Imagine how cool the graphics would look now with a 2D game (really wish it could even be in HD).

Obviously you know I'm a huge Metroid fan and I love the old school 2D Metroids, but I voted for both. I really have nothing against console 2D games and the series was at its best when Super Metroid came it in '94 on the Super Nintendo so I would be thrilled with another 2D Metroid game for the Revolution. At the same time I don't think 3D Metroids should be abandoned either because despite losing some of what made the series so great, they've also enhanced many things as well.
I don't think 2D Metroid games will land on the Revolution thoughit, and I expect any 2D Metroid games to be handheld exclusive. Hopefully Dread is still being made and the rumors of its cancelations are false, I know there are now rumors stating that it is in fact still in development.
Retro Studios is definitely on the right track with bringing the Metroid series closer to its roots with each game it seems and exploring it in 3D glory is something to experience. Metroid Prime was fantastic, I was blown away from start to finish honestly, the only thing it lacked was the eery vibe the Metroid series was known for. The game had a primarily earthy tone to it, with the exception of the Impact Crater, which was probably my favorite section of the game, I just wish it was longer.
Then Metroid Prime 2 came along and although the ratings were still great, it never got the credit it deserved. It was deeper, darker and more Metroid than Prime was, yet it was somehow looked upon as worse in most people's eyes. The bosses were better, the power-ups were better, I honestly don't see what people could bitch about in the game other than maybe Dark Aether being a little too similar throughout the game.
Now with Prime 3, I'm expecting Retro to be at their best and deliver an experience even truer to the series roots. The short clip shown at E3 already looks more alien than almost anything in Prime and Echoes. Hopefully I'm right in thinking it could potentially take away the crown from Super Metroid, but honestly, there's a slim chance of that ever happening no matter how optimistic I am.
You seriously need to give the Prime series a chance, you would really like them and understand why they are rated so highly. I would honestly suggest starting out with Echoes though, as you probably don't care too much about the story and it will hit a little closer to home on what you consider to be a good Metroid title.

I'm a fan of both 2D and 3D Metroid games, which is why I also voted for both. When it comes to 3D, I really think that Retro has done a great job with the Prime series. They were able to take everything that made the 2D games great, put it in 3D, and then add all types of new gameplay features. But, of course, 2D Metroid games are also a lot of fun. They're the classic-feeling Metroid games, and I would hate to see Nintendo stop making them. Also, welcome to the RN Forums, thelimper.

Well, I wouldn't say they were able to take everything into 3D. Jumps are significantly heavier in the Prime series they still haven't fully nailed the alien and creepy vibe the original three Metroids had down so well. Although that's less of an issue with the fact that it's 3D and more of an issue of just making it happen. You are right though, they've definitely added to the series in certain aspects. The sense of immersion is really great and the HUD in the Prime titles is amazing. Visors work great in 3D and first person as well, as opposed to Super Metroid's X-Ray Scope where time basically froze and you had to control the view with the D-Pad. There are ups and downs to going 3D, hopefully Prime 3 makes the downsides even less noticeable.

I think it's mostly the music. I suppose it can stay 3D if they just make all MIDI music for the next one.

It would be great by most other game's standards, and actually Echoes features music superior to Prime's, but it still is a little too techno and in the background. There's something that just needs to be more eery about it nothing in recent Metroid past, in 2D and 3D games, has matched Kraid's lair (not counting Zero Mission) or the theme for Maridia, two of the best pieces in game music history. The Impact Crater, which I mentioned earlier, is perfect though even in the music department

MP had bad music? Dude, Phandrana Drifts has one of the best songs I've heard in a game, period. But yeah, a Super Metroid for DS would be awesome.

Actually, I love the music in both games, I'm just saying that they weren't all "Metroidy" and could use a little more mood in them. And although I agree that a portable Super Metroid would be great, I was talking about Metroid Dread.

Never played a 2D Metroid before, and I never quite completed both MP and MP2, cuz it's too damn scary!!!!! (well, for me at least)
But I still loved both of them and if I ever become brave enough, I'd definitely go back and try to beat the game.

Listening to Ridley's lair music in Metroid 1 can still give me goose bumps. Also, listen to the under water sections in Super Metroid, really creepy music (Meridia?).
Oh and the elevator music in metroid always gave me chills as well.

Whatever the technical reason was, I wish it weren't true. *read in Game Informer* That was strictly a rumor. New rumors suggest that the game is actually still coming. We'll see at E3 this year, I expect the game will make an appearance or at least have some video footage. I highly doubt the game was canceled, although a name change is possible.

Handheld = 2D, Console = 3D. That's how it should be going forward.

They better at least keep putting them out for handhelds though, 3D better not take over the entire series. I'm hoping the latest rumors are right and Metroid is still being made, I would hate to think Hunters is the way Nintendo is going to keep bringing out handheld titles. I doubt it will though, it's pretty well known that it's more of a spinoff than anything.
