I finally got Gears of War (GoW) in the mail yesterday. I would have had it sooner, but Best Buy deleted my first order. This game is nothing short of amazing. I have never played a game quiet like it, or had the experience of any other game like this before.
Gameplay, the most important component for any successful video game. It has to be fun. It has to be immersive, and Gears of War delivers just that. The gameplay takes the form of a 3rd person shooter, but with more innovations than the regular hardcore 3rd person shooter games. This game requires for you to duck and cover, or you will be meat splattered on the concrete around you. It is context sensitive, and makes the movements behind cover easy with the push of the "A" button. But it is much more intense than you could imagine. It isn't exactly as precise as a game like Splinter-Cell, but it does require some timing, and twitch controls to keep you alive, all though a begginer would have no problem adjusting to the game, as long as they have played a shooting game before whether FPS or TPS.
he guns also make this game fun. The lancer is the main gun you should stick with, and the chainsaw kills you get with it would make even the most peace-loving hippie smile with joy. Hammer of God is not one to deny rights to being an awesome weapon as well. Satellite-laser-projectile guns are fun to kill, a la, the arm-blasting scene from the "Akira" manga series.
The story in GoW is a rather standard post-apocolyptic wolrd storyline where the alien-creature, or whatever you have, has waged war on mankind and appears to be winning, making mankind go to a special haven where the invaders cannot get to easily. Anyways, 14 years ago on E-day (Emergence Day), a race of these "alien-invaders" known as the Locust have appeared out of the ground through sinkholes and started the termination of human kind. You play the role of an ex-war hero who was unjustly thrown in prison and is released after the prison is invaded and a soldier by the name of Dom gets you out of there. Story is pretty simple and straight foward from there, but as simple as it seems, that does not make the game seem any less immersive. The cutscenes in the game are action packed, and keep you immersed, and sometimes would leave you with a "holy crap, this is hard core," feeling. It almost feels like you are in the action.
The CG and the in-game graphics are mind-blowing, and are the best that I have ever seen on any system, thus far. Sorry Half-Life 2 and Oblivion, but you got your asses beat by GoW. There is not much more detail to be put into this other than you might crap your pants, especially if you are on HDTV. Surpisingly the framerate is rather smooth, with a little slow down for a few seconds occasionally, but in the heat of battle it doesn't really get affected.
The sound quality is top notch. The said can't really be said for the music, not that there is much anyways. A suggestion would for you to put on some heavy metal or punk and blast away.
The multiplayer has two components, the VS. and the Co-Op, which both also have Xbox Live capabilities. The Co-Op over Xbox Live is a good idea, especially for the gamers without any friends in the real world. The multiplayer is on par with the single player and does not seem like an afterthough thrown on there. The multiplayer is ever just as intense as the singleplayer, and is not something to miss after you beat the singleplayer mode.
Overall the game is a kick ass game that should not be missed by the casual gamer, the shooting fan, the gore fan, and the gamers who love intense action. The game could be a bit longer, and have more than just 2 player multiplayer, but other than that, this game is near-perfect, and makes me forget Halo 2 ever existed.
