This is my review of Pokémon Colosseum.
The rating system I will use is 1-10 for each "section", and I will add up the points up to a max of 60. (Max of ten points for each review section.) Then I will calculate the added points, and give a "grade" rating.
Note: I have not completed the game fully, but I know enough to give it a review. I will update my review if I have to once I beat the game.
The newest installment to the Pokémon franchise, has arrived onto the GameCube and into my favorites list (#1 to be exact). This is a very good game, with very few flaws.
System: GameCube (Mainly) & Game Boy Advance/SP is required to have "customized" teams on the Colosseum mode.
Genre: RPG.
Gameplay
Rating: 10/10
While there's 2 modes of gameplay, the storymode is gonna be the most popular considering that it's the first Pokémon RPG to arrive on a console-based system.
This RPG/Storymode is geared to an older audience, but still appropriate for the younger gamers. And that's a plus for many Pokémon fans.
Now.. the gameplay is very good, with only 3 minor flaws, once you get your partner, she can sometimes get in the way in certain locations when you're moving around. So you have to push her to get her out of your way. She may even block some doorways until you push her out of the way. Also, you can't really drive your semi-hoverbike to different locations, you just select a location once you're in the world map, and your main character automatically rides there. Also, the camera angle is fixed, so it may promote minor problems for certain areas. Other than that, it's no biggy.
Otherwise, the gameplay is good, and you get a good deal of exploring your enviroments, and you can go almost anywhere in the towns you want.
The battlemode, or the Colosseum is very similar to the Pokémon Stadium games for the N64. Just pick your team, and start battling. It's very fun, but it requires that you have either purified Shadow Pokémon from the storymode, or a team from a Ruby/Sapphire Game Pak. Unless you're impatient and wanna play around with the Pre-set mode.
Story
Rating: 10/10
The storymode is really the only mode in this game that has a story, but it's pretty good. It's much deeper than any previous Pokémon game. In this game, you have to steal, or snag Pokémon from people who are gonna use these Pokémon, called Shadow Pokémon, for "world domination" and you have to snag the Shadow Pokémon away from the trainers that have them. After doing so, you have to purify your snagged Shadow Pokémon by means of battling, and a "secret way". This is pretty much all of the story I have for now...
Graphics
Rating: 10/10
The graphics are very smooth, and hardly choppy, or too polygonal. The battling animations are very well done, and so are the Pokémon, and the trainers.
Music
Rating: 9/10
While a rock-type genre of music is not really my style, the music is perfect in the areas/parts they are played in. Some tunes are also catchy. The small downfall is, You cannot change the music volume level. (See below)
Sounds (sound effects)
Rating: 10/10
Replay Value
Rating: 9/10
I see major replay value of the Battlemode at least, unsure about the Storymode, but I'll update this section once I beat storymode. So far.. the storymode is very fun, so replaying might just happen..
Overall
Rating: 58/60 points. (9.7/10 grade)
This is a great game, with very few flaws. I recommend it.
