NOTE: I had pictures, and bold font and stuff...but I'm too lazy to switch it to UBBC code Here is the review:
~The Hobbit~
This game is very good. I really liked it...a lot.
It follows the book very closely, and even adds more to the main events that occurred in the novel.
Graphics - 9.5/10
The graphics were AMAZING in this game! I loved them so much! The cut-scenes were remarkable! They looked like and animated movie or something! Even in normal game-play, the graphics were still great! But, that's a given. Graphics are always better in cut-scenes . The scenery in the game was beautiful, and kind of set an image in my mine to what the characters and places in the book really do look like. There were amazing sunsets, rivers, fields, towns...etc. It's all truly stunning.
The one thing that I did notice was that the graphics just kind of messed up in a few places. Very minor...but sometimes the camera messed up as well.
Reply Value - 7/10
Although I came to the game fairly often, to try and beat it...it sometimes got a little frustrating and made me leave it alone for a while. Also, if I get to a point, and don't want to go on, because I just really know it'll get annoying, or tough, I do the same. But, the reply is fairly good. I always like to re-visit Hobbiton, and walk around a bit. It's quite fun to be innovative in the game. There are few places in which I can just walk around, like Hobbiton, etc. The rest are just levels, filled with enemies, that don't allow you to laze around.
Game-Play – 8.5/10
I really like how the game moves around, and the style of fighting. Most of the time, you can just whack at the enemies as much as you can, until they die. Although some enemies, require that you do something else first, such as: In the Troll Cave chapter, the mini-boss requires you to kill the children for it’s underbelly to be exposed. Then you can stab at that and lower its life-meter. However, there are some things that I do not like about it. There’s a lot of jumping involved in the game, and sometimes, if it’s not aimed perfectly, you’ll end up falling off a cliff. It can get kind of annoying, having to keep trying…but I always eventually get it. Also, the camera view can kind of get annoying, when in battle, or trying to look at something. It moves around, or gets jammed when you’re close to walls, and you can’t see everything right.
Generally, though, the game-play is overall pretty good.
Sound – 9/10
The sound is truly amazing in this game. Not just the battle sounds and cries…but the music is wonderful! I LOVE the music in this game. Every level has a set music, and it perfectly matches the mood and theme in the level. Well, even if the song was played before in a level, it still matches beautifully. One of my favorite songs in the game is in Hobbiton. It is very mood-setting and it even fits with the kind of surroundings, such as: Green fields; Big, blue skies; many trees; Flowing rivers; etc. Another song is in the beginning sequence. It’s very good, and makes me feel suspenseful, as to what will happen in the game.
Now I’ll talk about the sound effects of the game. They are very good…very, very good. Every time you hit something with your sword, it sounds very realistic. You can even hear (Don’t want to gross out…) the flesh slicing when you hit something. Sorry for that little bit of information . Also, it changes the sound from stick, to sword. When it’s the stick, you just hear it beating hard against the enemy and/or wall you are striking. Either way, the sound is great!
The sounds in the Dream World are pretty good to start out with. It sounds like a real battle, with a lot of sword clashing, and stomping, and yelling. It’s very interesting to enter that area, and feel like you’re in one of Tolkien’s wars that are in his books.
Also, even the tiny sounds that you don’t often notice are detailed. Like walking around, or running, or jumping, etc. You can hear Bilbo’s feet hitting the ground, and his clothes swishing. The sound changes on different terrains and ground materials. It’s very good.
Control – 8.8/10
The control of your character is quite good. I would have given it a 9, but there are also some minor flaws that can be a tad annoying. Like for instance: If you’re running kind of fast, and you need to turn or something, you run into a wall, and need to turn around, yadda yadda… Also, I took away more points, because it isn’t the best controllability I have seen before. It gets pretty weird sometime.
The basic controls, for moves, walking, jumping, etc. is fairly easy to understand. They are very basic, and don’t change much as you progress in the game. There aren’t very many button combos to use, other than pressing the A button really fast to attack faster.
Moving the camera around is pretty simple. You simply move the C stick around, and place the camera in the position you want. A lot of times, it moves automatically, and gets a little frustrating. It moves into a bad position when you near walls and get too close, and then you can’t see your surroundings very well. It can sometimes cause damage obviously .
Overall, the control is pretty well done.
Final Score!!! – 45/50
I added how many times I gave a score out of 10, and got 50. So, I counted the final score on that.
This game is very beautiful, and unique. The styles of the game are somewhat new, and are very detailed. This game has some of the best graphics in a long time that I’ve seen. The graphics don’t make the game, however.
The sound is very wonderful, and mood-matching. The sound almost molds the game into what it is. I really loved the music, and the sound-effects alike.
The plot and story are highly original, but that is because they were based on the famous Novel, The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. However, some of the extras that were added, to make the game more like a game, were very good. They fit very well with the already existing story-line.
These three factors, to me, are the most important. If a game has high qualities of these three things, then I believe it’s a good game. But, if I were to choose one of these, I’d choose a good story over all.
