Killer 7 Preview
At a first look, Killer 7 can be summed up in one word; confusing. All of the information given out by Nintendo and Capcom is rather confusing and none of the videos make any sense. This is the feeling that makes every gamer anxiously await its release this June. Of course, some information has been leaked and videos have been processed.
When I first watched the Killer 7 videos, I was confident that it would get the rare “Adults Only” rating. Why? First off, this game has more blood and gore than a Grand Theft Auto. In one video, you see a character with half of its head missing, then a gameplay movie plays, and that same character comes back with even more of its head gone. The entire game looks very violent and melancholy. Secondly, the game has a subtle sexual theme. For a few seconds, you hear the moans and screams of a girl as she is obviously doing something sexual, what it is we cannot tell, as the camera only shows about a fourth of her body from behind a counter. She then proceeds to get off of someone/something she has recently straddled. She then says “Oh, I didn’t see you there…” Capcom is obviously going to use shock value as a selling point, which this game indefinitely has. Of course, the game is also riddled with strong language and some intense themes.
From what Capcom has released, you are a hit man, Harman Smith. You must destroy the Heaven’s Smiles, which are horrific soldiers, with smiles, reeking havoc on anything that gets in their way. Your ultimate goal is to destroy their leader, Kun Ran. Of course, on man in a wheelchair isn’t enough. Harman Smith is a special type of schizophrenic man, who has the ability to switch between seven different personalities by switching between channels on a TV. Each of these characters has a special ability and weapon to help Harman progress through the game.
Garcian Smith: Garcian is pretty much the medic. He helps heal your fallen comrades, so if he dies, it’s pretty much game over. He’s always carrying a briefcase, and does a lot of talking in the movies that have been released.
Dan Smith: Extremely strong and well trained. Has the ability to slow time.
Mask De Smith: A grenade launcher toting wrestler, who can counter his enemies’ attacks.
Coyote Smith: Has the ability to unleash a “Gang Kick” which can take down an enemy in one blow.
Kaede Smith: The oddest of the powers in the group, as well as the only girl. She has the power to repel her attackers by shooting a large amount of blood with a deadly virus in it.
Con Smith: A blind DJ, with exceptional hearing. He uses this to find secret areas and items.
Kevin Smith: An independent personality that keeps to himself mostly. He can kill most enemies with his knife techniques.
The entire game is just…odd. You don’t run around independently, but rather you travel from point A to point B. Your character runs to a certain intersection, say between two doors. You have the choice to go in one of those doors, keep traveling down the hallway or go back from where you came. This just adds to eccentricity of the game, and shows you just how different Killer 7 will be. This won’t be your simple run and gun game. Your character will have to stop, and then shoot. Of course, some enemies are invisible, and you’ll have to scan the area to find them.
Of course, we have to take a look at the man behind the game. Some call him crazy, some call him genius. But sadly, most of Suda 51’s games haven’t been released in America. The majority of his games are hits, but are only released in Japan. We’ll see how he is received in America, and we’ll see if Killer 7 lives up to his name.
One of the odd things about Killer 7 is its graphical style. Cel shading hasn’t been accepted well by fans, especially when the topic is more serious, and has a big fan base (Wind Waker?) The blood coming out of enemies looks more like it’s coming out of a tube as it sprays out in strait lines. It just adds to the eccentricity and mystery that is Killer 7.
Of course, besides the main eight, there are side characters. From screenshots and gameplay videos, we probably haven’t seen them all, but the ones we have seen are just as odd and weird as the game presents itself to be. The first (and probably the oddest) character is either gay or metro. He wears a tight black shirt with the words “Sexual” on it. Another is Harman’s caretaker is where you save the game. These are just a few of the characters and all I can say is “Wow……”
As of right now, all we can do is wait. It would be a good guess that Capcom will keep the game secret until its launch to boost sales. The game will be shrouded in mystery for a long time, and all we can do is sit and wait until E3 2005 comes around for more information.
