Animal Crossing was a huge hit for the Cube back in 2002. It was the Seinfeld for Nintendo, as the game was based entirely on nothing. You did the same chores over and over again, talked to the same people, while your ultimate goal was to earn enough money to pay off your debt to Tom Nook. You either hated Animal Crossing, or you loved it. At E3 2004, a portable and now online version of the game has been announced.
The idea of a portable, wireless AC has many fans ecstatic. The thought of going to your friends’ town and interacting and chatting with them is a huge upgrade to the game. While most sequels consist of some little tweaks and a few new features, Animal Crossing To Go seems to keep what was so addicting and fun about AC for the Cube, and re-invent the rest to capture even more fans and make the game even better than it originally was.
The first thing I noticed about ACTG was the fact that the entire town is now yours to travel without the waiting between squares. Although this takes away the sense of how much land you actually have to run around, you now see a much wider area and you can move the camera around to get a much better view. Although you could move the camera in the first game, this was only available inside your house, and will most likely be a big help, as your character became somewhat out of skew while playing on the Cube version.
Another thing that has been improved since 2002 is the clothing option. You no longer have to make a really cool shirt pattern, and have to wear the same thing on your head. From the small amount of screens released, you can see that your character can not only wear different things on his head and body, but he can have a hair cut, and wear many different hats and outfits, even if they don’t match. For example, in one screen “Kyoto” is wearing a sombrero and a long sleeve shirt. While in another screen, “Nate” is wearing a pirate hat and camo.
Of course, along with clothing is what many hailed as one of the most addicting, and time consuming portion of the game; making your own clothes designs. Now, instead of the old, time consuming process of one pixel at a time, you can draw your designs quickly, and to your liking. Of course, there will probably still be the pixel-by-pixel art, for those that love to take their time. Although, since ACTG will be an online game, there will possibly be an option to upload your patterns to the official Animal Crossing website, or possibly a third party site like Animal Crossing Community.
One of the greatest things to do in AC, was going to your friends town and exploring, leaving them gifts, etc. Not only can you can still do that, but your friend can be there to give you a personal tour or trade with you. Not very many details are available yet, but let’s hope Nintendo will blow us away with how you can interact with your friends and how ACTG will be online.
There are not many ways to make AC any better. It emulated life very well, and it was addicting from the first time you picked it up. But, the menu could have been better. This is where the touch screen comes in. Instead of having to waste your time going in and out of the menu, it’s located on the bottom screen for quick access and quick changing of items and clothes. Although this was only a minor hassle, it will only make the gameplay smoother and the game more addicting.
Although details are few, ACTG promises to be one of the killer apps for the DS. An official date has not been set yet, but it is speculated to be released around Nov 21. This could also hint the release date of the Revolution, but not likely. As of right now, all we can do is make more patterns and do more chores to keep us occupied until the relase of ACTG later this year.
