SONIC RUSH, for the NINTENDO DS
***review by PilgrimJohn***
Faster than a speeding banana cream pie! Able to leap over tall midgets in a single bound! It's Sonic Rush, the hedgehog's first foray into DS software, and a comfortable return to his roots.
STORYLINE/PLOT:
I've decided to get this out of the way: compared to the other Sonic games, this story is pure crap. A tear in the Time-space continuum? The Sol Emeralds are what we need to patch it up? Eggman has an evil twin? Trust me, it just gets more and more ridiculous. The cutscenes are little more than puppet shows with squeaky and annoying voicework. But this of course won't be the reason you play the game.
GAMEPLAY:
Remember the good old days on Genesis, with that little blue bugger zipping everywhere? They're back, and with a new feature--Nitro. The loop-de-loops are here, the controls are tight, and the game is downright fast. And if it's not fast enough for you roadhogs, slam the Nitro button for an extra boost that turns Sonic into a rocket. However, much like all Sonic games, the cheap deaths still occur from time to time, killing the speed. What a drag.
Also, the level design is some of the most original in Sonic games to date. Sure, it's the same environments in several places (Jungle? Been there. Carnival? Done that), but they're designed cleverly, with rockets, parachute jumps, swings, spinners, disappearing ledges, and travelling light bridges. It's one wild ride.
GRAPHICS:
Visually spectacular. Sonic, Blaze, and the enemies and bosses are all in 3D, but the environment is hand-drawn. There's really nothing like this on the DS. It's a perfect blend of what DS ought to look like.
The cutscenes, as mentioned before, are lame. The graphics are stunning otherwise.
MUSIC/SOUND:
The voice-acting is horrible. Expected? Sure. The fact that there isn't much of it is a blessing however.
The music is as catchy as it comes, from the hyperactive boss theme to the "doody-doo" sounds of the Night Carnival Zone will make your ears dance and your toes tap. Prepare to order CDs of the soundtrack.
OVERALL:
This is what Sonic is about--speed. Not collecting or raising Chao or any of that crap. Regardless of your opinion about the 3D Sonics, Sonic purists should definitely pick this up.
GOOD:
*Tight, responsive controls
*Addictively fast gameplay
*The Nitro boost itself
*The trippy (yah... trippy) music
*Beautiful, lush visuals
*Boss levels are fun and work your brain to take each one down
*There isn't much voice-acting
BAD:
*The storyline is stupid and makes no sense whatsoever
*The voice clips that do exist are irritating
*The game is short
SCORE: 9.0/10
