Yay! The review I know that some of you have been waiting for by me. OK, maybe not... but I can hope, right?
I use a rating system like everyone does (or should) when they review something, but I use it in my sort of way (other people probably use it as well). You know how you got graded in school? They would divide your correct answers by the total amount of answers, and then you got your grade for that assignment? That's how I do it after I add up my points. I simply add up each section's points, and then start dividing. This is simply my system. For this particular review, there is a total of 60 possible points.
Note: Be prepared for some reading. This is probably the longest review I have ever written. Also, this review would've been written sooner, but I wasn't able to get the game due to shortages and availability until March 1st. I also wanted to spend time playing the game, and I now finally am able to play it over WiFi. I also wanted to wait to do that, so I can write up a seperate review section about the WiFi feature for this game, so I could type out a full review.
One of the most anticipated games has come out for the Nintendo DS. Animal Crossing was a pretty popular game for the GameCube, and now DS owners can own the next one in the series. Animal Crossing for the GCN was known for it's wacky fun-loving neighbors, kooky visitors, and hundreds of items to deck your pad out with. You were even able to get items from people around the world by the use of codes. The DS brings back some of the old, and adds new things for old and new fans alike. This game also features over 1,300 items! That's enough for anyone. I like a challenge....
Graphics:
Rating: 10/10
The graphics look great on the Nintendo DS. Nearly the same as the prequel's, but for the DS this time around. The GCN version had N64 graphics (since it was basically a remake of the Japanese N64 game, Animal Forest), so there aren't very many differences between the GCN, and the DS games. Either way, it still looks great.
Gameplay:
Rating: 9/10
This game is just too fun. Personally, I'm addicted to it. But anyways... This game really is fun. It doesn't have that Mario or Zelda-like gameplay, but it's great in it's own way. If The Sims were popular, this game will also be popular, and they both are. They are basically the same in a way, but very different as well. You can do a multitude of things. You can fish, hunt for insects, dig for fossils, or just chat with the locals. You can help them run tasks, by delivering letters, or other little items for them. They may even "challenge" you to see who can catch a bug or fish first. I do miss some of the things in the first game, but this one is still great. And depending on your daily schedule, you can change the clock in the game, or if you're done doing whatever for that day, you can save & end, then change the clock. What makes it even more fun, is the fact that you can connect over WiFi and visit other people's towns, or have them visit you, but I'll review the WiFi part of the gameplay in a different section.
Controls:
Rating: 10/10
The controls are SIMPLE. And I mean simple. The best part of it probably is that you have a choice of using the control pad and button method, or the now easier stylus method. Or you can use both like I do. It's now easier to move items around in your item menu. Once you get the hang of it, it's also easy to fully control your character with just the stylus, even moving him/her around the town. Overall, great use of the controls. At least there's a choice for gamers.
Sound/Music:
Rating: 9/10
The sounds are good in the game. The best you can probably get with the DS's speakers. There is something I have noticed though. When you see/hear a bee flying around some flowers, sometimes the buzzing noise will linger on when you go to another part of your town. The length of time is random. The most I've had was about 3mins before the buzzing disappeared. It can get annoying, but going into a building will stop the noise. At least there's a cure... Now, as for the music, it's great for this game. Each hour the music changes, so at least you don't have to listen to the same theme over and over again all day, or however long you play it. In winter, you will even have a few wintery tunes as well. The sounds and music are a perfect fit for this game.
Replayability:
Rating: 10/10
I love this game so much, that once I collect everything, or just got bored with my current town, that I would replay this game again. I'm pretty sure others would say the same. This is one of those games where you could play over and over again for quite a while. Just make sure you have some good friends so you could get all the fruit you need again. Having the same one fruit in your town will get kinda... blah after a while. Gotta have fruit. Hah...
WiFi Playability:
Rating: 10/10
This is like one of the best things in this game, if not the best. I always wished I could visit someone else's town on the GCN game, but I couldn't. I had no friends really where I lived at the time, so the only way I could visit another town was by getting a 2nd memory card to do so. That was OK for some things, but it wasn't really fun. Now, we can visit other people's towns freely, but on one condition, you need to register eachother's friend codes. That's OK with me, at least you can pick people that you can be pretty sure of not wrecking your town or something. I don't mind it. I don't need any trouble makers anyways. WiFi is just awesome with this game. You can exchange items with friends, and the best part to me, you can chat with them (I love chatting with my friends). Just press Select and start typing with the on-screen keyboard. And if you got any, you can express upto 4 different emotions as well. You can invite upto 3 people to your town as well, so if you got a bunch of friends, start having fun.
Overall:
Rating: 58/60 (9.7 Grade)
This game is a definite must have in anyone's collection, unless you're just not into this type of game. If not, just try it at least. Rent it, or if you have any friends that owns it, ask to play or borrow it to try it out. Whether you like it or not depends on you, but it is a great game. It's good to play with friends, and maybe even family. If your family can afford to get multiple copies of the game, and a couple of DS's, then play DS to DS local play. Or just make multiple residents in one game. You can have up to 4 in one house. It's still just as fun either way. The first game was a major favorite, and this game will follow as well.
