Metroid Prime: Hunters
Can you secure the Ultimate Power?
Platform: DS
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo Software Technology (NST)
Genre: First Person Shooter
Players: 1-4
Ship Date: 03/20/2006
ESRB: T
Story:
You are Samus Aran, the Federation's best bounty hunter. The Federation has learned of an "Ultimate Power" and wants you to either secure it for their use or, if needed, destroy it. You are not the only one hunting the Power, though...
Gameplay:
There are only two modes to choose from in Hunters (Regulator, Survival and Morph Ball were taken out). There are different worlds in Adventure Mode that you visit. While on each world, you try to attain a crystal-like object called an Octolith, which the other Hunters are after too. If you lose in a battle with them, they will take one of your Octoliths and won't give it up until you try again. Single player is very short, though, and it is really repetitive. Worlds are pretty bland and most doors are unresponsive when you shoot them. To change the mood, however, Multiplayer Mode is great! You can connect to up to 3 other friends (either DS to DS or WiFi is really easy to use too- there may have been a few glitches, but, all in all, Multiplayer is the best part of the game, greatly surpassing Single-player Mode.
Score: 8/10
Control:
Hunters gives you a couple of control possibilities. You can either use the touch screen and the D-pad or the D-pad and the buttons (both with a left had configuration). Each types gives the game a different feel, but the using touch screen makes it a lot easier to aim and your game will flow much more smoothly. Aiming with the stylus is very accurate, too.
Score: 9.5/10
Sound:
The sound in this game is phenomenal. The music is great and sounds even better with the DS's large speakers. The sound effects are the best, though. Shooting noise is a tolerable sound, unlike other games that I've played. The monster's reactions sound crisp and clear when you shoot them, too, making for extra effects.
Score: 9.8/10
Graphics:
The DS is a portable, thus bringing down the expectations of it's game's graphics. That isn't the case for Hunters. The graphics are clear and look great on the system. The cut scenes are what really blow me away- they are fantastically done with little to no flaws. There are some gameplay scenes that could use some more work, though.
Score: 9.5/10
Overall Score: 9.2/10
A good game overall, but I would think twice about buying it if you won't have Multiplayer options.
Screenshots:
Samus in her Morph Ball form.
Samus using her Bombs to bounce up the cliff.
Random multiplayer gameplay as Spire.
More multiplayer gameplay action as Noxus.
Trace firing the Judicator weapon.
Kanden's alternate weapon, the Volt Driver.
