All right, that just makes me hate Sony even MORE.

All right, that just makes me hate Sony even MORE. Yeah, I despise companies that are successful. I mean, that's reason enough for hatred.

I hate them because they have all these trashy advertisement methods, and people buy it up. Therefore, I hate both Sony and the people who fall for their stupid commercials.

You didn't even mention that before saying you hated Sony even more. The only thing that was being talked about was them being successful in Japan. If you're going to hate a company because you don't like their ads, then go ahead. You're the one missing out.

Sony's marketing is working, Nintendo's is not. Sony isn't the one that needs to change. I find it ludicrous that Nintendo has such a weak advertising department when they have so many fantastic games. They need to pump out WAY MORE for their big hitters. I was sorely dissapointed at the sales of Metroid Prime 2, because it SHOULD have sold better than Splinter Cell for Xbox (they both released the same week). DS just has a ridiculously badass line-up that needs to be promoted more. Sony has some quality titles, there is no doubt of that (God of War was awesome...Shadow of the Colossus was good, but flawed). But in terms of overall quality, Nintendo basically destroys any other dev out there (in my humble opinion).

Gamecube underperformed for a few reasons, most notably bad marketing.
If you have, within one year of launch, a lineup that includes Smash Bros., Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Resident Evil Zero, Star Fox Adventures, Rogue Squadron II, etc., you should not be losing to Splinter Cell and Halo.
Instead, ED got a bad ad campaign, Mario got a horribly "kiddie" name and a gigantic ad campaign that only fueled the "kiddie" stigma, and Xbox offered this huge price cut deal campaign thingy in holiday 2002 contrasted to Nintendo's "doing nothing" and not advertising Metroid Prime as GameCube's "Halo."
Then they cel-shaded Zelda, went all big on connectivity only to realize after a year of pushing to high heaven that it was a failure. They cut ties with Rare, Factor 5, Left Field and Silicon Knights, lost RE4 as an exclusive, etc. We got Geist, though.
The fact was, the GameCube was dead at launch, and there was nothing they could have done to change it, despite that amazing 2002 lineup. No one should have approved the GameCube's toy-like design, or the launch lineup barren of anything appealing to anyone over 10. Yeah, Nintendo thanks for the new series (Pikmin and Animal Crossing), but get this, they won't get you anywhere if they continue to cater to the same demographic! And you know goddamned well that Miyamoto's new IP for Revolution is going to be something quirky as all hell, that'll sell it's relegated 400k copies to the Nintendo faithful, and 0 consoles.
GameCube was a big learning experience for them. Hopefully at E3, we'll find out that they learned.

That's rather harsh, Greg. But yeah, it seems as though Gamecube's greats went unnoticed. Rev's gonna be waaay better though. Believe it!

I think that Nintendo has definitely learned its lesson, Greg. Just look at the Revolution's design. It's the exact opposite of GCN's purple, toy-like look. Plus, Nintendo is really emphasizing how great the Revolution controller will be with first-person shooters. If this was five years ago, the Big N would not have said anything about FPS games.

Certainly, Yamauchi took over Nintendo when it was a toy company, and I think he had that mentality. The switch to Iwata took place in 2002, and by then it was all said and done.
Still, they're going to have to not send mixed signals this time around. Cool ads followed by footage of Luigi and Pikmin is going to confuse people again.
I still say shelve the Mario sports games for a gen, limit it to one Mario Party. Sure, they sell like hotcakes and that's good for Nintendo, but it's actually slowly killing the industry in the same way that EA is.
A new controller rocks, but it really means little if we get the same games over and over.
